How does life on Mars fit in with God’s plan?

Question

Gramps,

There has been many questions of whether life exists on Mars. With the new discoveries by our probes and scientific instruments, discoveries are pointing to the possibility. How does this fit with the plan of God?

John

Answer

John,

I would like to start with by sharing Moses 1:33,35:

33 And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten.

35 But only an account of this earth, and the inhabitants thereof, give I unto you. For behold, there are many worlds that have passed away by the word of my power. And there are many that now stand, and innumerable are they unto man; but all things are numbered unto me, for they are mine and I know them.

In this passage the Lord is talking about all the worlds he has created (which would of course clearly include Mars) and how he created this Earth. The Lord also tells us that he is only going to provide an account for this Earth.

That leaves us only really able to speculate about Mars. We know that God doesn’t do anything without a purpose and a reason. What would have been a good enough reason for God to cause Mars to be created? Was it inhabited at some point? Will it be inhabited at some point? Or was it designed because of the impact it would have on us? Mars has been noticed and pondered on and stories made up and told, and even now we are reaching out to learn more about it. I could see any of those reasons being “good enough” for God to create it.

In the end though we need to remember the words found in Isaiah 55:8-9:

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

We can try to guess all we want about life on Mars and what purpose it might serve in God’s plan, but chances are we are not going to fully understand until He reveals it to us.

  1. Nice response to an impossible to answer question. Mars could be at the start or end of a very long journey. We simply do not know.

  2. I’ve often wondered if the huge gas giants like Jupiter or Saturn might not be needed for hydrogen fuel during the Millennium—for ships in space. We had no idea 300 years ago that the huge coal and oil deposits here on the earth would be so vitally needed today. But everything is prepared ahead of time by the Lord when we are ready for them.

  3. One of the rare examples of where mankind is stepping out to explore an area that is expressly stated by the Lord to be beyond the account and record that He is willing to bestow upon us at this time. To me, this says, “Go check it out, it’s cool, and know that I’m still with you”. Kind of like letting a toddler explore for him/herself a new room in the house that’s always been there but the door has been closed until now. And you letting them explore it all on their own with you standing behind them every step of the way but saying nothing. 🙂
