Are church members today Masons?

Question

Gramps,

Are members today free masons?

Gloria

Answer

Gloria,

Yes, there are.  Many of them, in fact.

For many years Latter-day Saints were blackballed (literally) from membership in Utah lodges.  But that was not so elsewhere.  Today there is no prohibition from Masons becoming Saints, nor Saints from becoming Masons.  You may be concerned about the similarities of signs and tokens.  That isn’t as true as some believe.

If you go to all the lodges around the country, you’ll find that they don’t all have the same signs and tokens.  Some are similar.  Some are not.  Some are identical.  Some are completely different.  It really is hit or miss.

The important thing is that they are for different purposes.  See my earlier article on the topic here:

Reading about the Freemason’s handshake has caused great doubt of my faith.  Can you help or explain?

Have fun exploring.
