Are Jehovah and Jesus Christ the same person?

Question

Dear Gramps:

I am a bit confused when I was told that according to the teaching of the Mormon Church, Jehovah of the Old Testament is the same person as Jesus of the New Testament. If so, who delivered the Ten Commandments to Moses? Elohim or Jehovah? Who turned Lot’s wife into a pillar of salt? Where can I look for more discussion of this Mormon teaching? Thank you.

Answer

Dear Shane,

The source to look for additional information on the identity of Jesus Christ as Jehovah is in the Bible itself. Let’s go through a few scriptures that I believe will point out who is whom. We will start with Exodus 6:2-3.

And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD:

And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.

So Jehovah is not God the Father. But He represents God the Father to the people of the earth. Whenever the word LORD (all upper case) is mentioned in the Old Testament, it is translated from the Hebrew word, Yhovah. It is my understanding that the word Jehovah is a compound of the Hebrew verbs was, is and will be–in other words, the Eternal One.

The Hebrew, Elohim, is the plural for the word, God, meaning the Gods. But it is taken as the name of the Father in Heaven. Now, translating that first phrase above from the Hebrew, it would read, And Elohim spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am Yhovah. I wasn’t really Elohim who was speaking, as the scripture says, it was Jehovah.. The next verse explains that Jehovah appeared to the Patriarchs as El ShaddayEl (the singular of Elohim) and Shadday– meaning Almighty or the Most Powerful, implying God the Father, but by his name Jehovah, or the Eternal One, he was not known to them. The above is given to differentiate Jehovah from God the Father, or Elohim.

Now we will find an Old Testament scripture that identifies Jehovah with Jesus Christ– Zechariah 12:8-10.

8 In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them.

9 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first born.

In verse 8 the LORD, or Jehovah, is speaking. In verses 9 and 10 the pronoun, I, refers to the same LORD, or Jehovah– I will seek to destroy and I will pout out upon the house of David

Then comes the key–

they shall look upon me [Jehovah] whom they have pierced and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first born.

Clearly, Jehovah is stating that it is HE the only begotten and the first born son of the Father, even Jesus Christ, that shall be pierced and shall be mourned for and for whom they shall be in bitterness.

  1. I don’t know If you have noticed- Jesus recognizes himself as an angel who is the most beautiful of all the stars / angels.
Revelation 22:16 … I am the bright MORNING STAR

    1. 🙂 Hello sir thats the issue .. I say this to you lets use the KJV version ‘kay?

      In Isaiah 14:12(KJV)
“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!”

      In Revelation 22:16 (KJV)
” I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.”

People would tend to think and ask why would Christ claim as the morning star since Lucifer was the morning star but as you would have noticed

      Lucifer is the MORNING STAR
While Jesus is THE BRIGHT AND MORNING STAR

As for your question… HE is not implying that He himself is an angel but someone higher than an Angel 🙂

2 months ago you explained that God and Jesus are not one… Here is my reference 🙂

      1. Isaiah 7:14 gives us the prophecy of the Virgin Birth of Christ and states that His name would be “Immanuel.”
Matthew 1:23 tells us that this word means “God with us.”

      2. In Isaiah 9:6, Jesus is called “Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
The Bible certainly would not say this about anyone less than God.

      3. In John 10:30, Jesus says, “I and my Father are one.” Jesus is not a lesser god; He is ONE with the Father.

I know that its Jesus’ point of view but check Isaiah 7:14 again 🙂

and finally John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Who is the word? Jesus Himself..

      1. Im actually pretty happy about this haha.. Lets share some ideas ^_^

About that prayer at first it looks like what you ought it to be .. Try understanding deeper, Jesus wanted us to know that when we pray the prayer might be modeled like His.. Especially “thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”. He cried because Jesus felt alone.. In the last part of His torture Jesus said ” Father why have you forsaken me?” Because of that simple sentence many beliefs were made but for me He said that because He knows that being left alone is a really sad thing.. Ill be honest its hard to explain these things to a person through typical writing.. Since we’re the only ones here I want you to know this and its a bit far-off the topic i think hehe huehue~

        God is my superhero why?
He saw the world full of chaos and sins lusted over earth but because He loved us He left His throne in heaven and physically transcended as a human being called Emmanuel (Jesus), lead a godly life w/o sin then the time came for His cruxification, died because of our sins, because He loved us so much and showed the world that He has overcome death..

The God that I believe in is someone who really loves us that He is willing to sacrifice Himself and establish a path to eternity.

Rather than a God who would just watch and makes decisions for us as He just sits there in His throne.

You know what sir? :’) The God that I believe in is someone who is really the epitome of true love.

A text in the bible says that if you love you get hurt but continue loving..

I have not put the verses and chapters but Ive experienced it myself :’)

      2. Sir I know Jehovah’s witnesses are full wisdom but solomon says wisdom without heart is meaningless.. I dont know your life nor your story but the truth Himself will show you the real love that we allbare looking for 🙂

      3. You say that Jesus Christ is Jehovah????
In Genesis chapter 1 verse 26: And God said, let us make man in our image
How is my Creator the only true living God Jehovah talking with?

  2. Im sorry.. but your explanation is not that really persuasive.. In fact you are explaining and contradicting your own thoughts.. No offense but pls revise it so that people could understand it better 🙂

    1. Jesus Christ was praying luke chapter 22 verse 44
But who was Jesus christ praying to?

Does the Allmighty creator God Jehovah pray????
      Are you kidding me??

Read the book of Job chapter 38, and chapter 40
Does HE Pray??? Or Do we human pray to HIM?

  3. John chapter 1 vers 1: …And the Word was God.
The explaining for this is Daniel chapter 7 vers 13-14
    And 1 Corinthians chapter 15 vers 24-28
OUR CREATOR GAVE THE RULERSHIP POWER TO JESUS CHRIST
BUT JESUS HAD TO DIE FOR OUR SINS.
1 CORINTHIANS CHAPTER 15 VERS 28 IS A CLEAR ANSWER.

  4. In the book of Ezekiel our creator says in chapter 28 verse 2: You are only a human not a God.
Would our creator Jehovah himself be born as a human?

In The gospel of john jesus christ says in chapter 8 verse 28: as the father have teached me.
Does our Creator God Jehovah need to be teached?

In the gospel of Matthew jesus christ says in chapter 23 verse 3: dont call anyone on earth your father..
    JESUS WAS ON EARTH

    Sincerly Diyar.K

  5. If you read the Bible all the holy 66 books
Read it deep and LOOK ESPECIALLY at the book of job chapter 38 and chapter 40 how Jehovah talks to job, and then in the Gospels how Jesus talks with his desciples

The different way our Creator and Heavenly Father God Jehovah talks, and then how our beloved Messianic King Jesus Christ talks.

    They are two different beings
