What is the name that Jesus was called during his mortal life?

Question

Dear Gramps,

I have read several different names for Jesus including Jehovah and Joshua. If I were walking with Jesus during his life and someone said his name, what is the name I would have heard?

Lynn

Answer

Dear Lynn,

You would have heard the word, Yeshua, which is the Aramaic version of the Hebrew Joshua, that the people spoke in His time and place. The word literally means, “Jehovah saves,” a further affirmation that the New Testament Jesus and the Old Testament Jehovah are one and the same person. The Oxford English Dictionary on Historical Principles (Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1933), tells us that the word Jesus came into the English language from Middle English, adapted from the Latin Iesus, which in turn was adapted from the Greek Iesous. This in turn was adapted from the Hebrew or Aramaic word Yeshua or Yehoshua.
