What does the LDS Church say about PG-13 movies?

Question

Gramps,

What does the LDS Church say about PG-13 movies?

Debbie

Answer

Debbie,

A long time ago, the church stopped referencing the rating system for movies. The reason is simple; what was PG-13 years ago is PG or G rated now. What may have been R or even X rated years ago is more acceptable now than ever.

Said another way, the morals of the world are slipping lower and lower. The movie rating system just isn’t reliable as a standard of measure.

The church’s official stand is that we are to enjoy wholesome family entertainment in keeping with the standards of the church. My take on it is if I’d be comforable watching a movie with my mother and father, then it’s probably a good show. Even though my parents finished this life years ago, they still influence my behavior today. Good parents have that effect.

  1. If we see a trailer for a film we think we’d like to see, we always check it out on imdb.com first. There is a contents advisory section which helps us to decide whether or not the film would be suitable. One cannot always go by ratings any more, unfortunately!
