Are there daughters as well as sons of perdition?

Dear Gramps,

Many times over the years I have come across the term ‘Son’s of Perdition’. Does that mean there are no daughter’s of perdition and if not is it a matter of holding the priesthood at the time of denying and fighting against the truth? Thanks.

Dear David,

That is an interesting question. The phrase used is always, “sons of perdition” just because of the convention of the English language. It could just as well have been “children of perdition,” except that the word, children, invokes the concept of youth. For what makes a man, ‘er person, a child of perdition? Such an one has received a sure knowledge of Jesus Christ by direct manifestation from the Holy Ghost, and then in the light of that knowledge has turned away from God and has become an enemy of the Lord Jesus Christ. Of course women can do that as well as men. Elder Alvin R. Dyer made the following statement in this regard—

“These personages who have become evil agents unto themselves in this life join the evil band of Lucifer and his kingdom of evil to oppose God and his plan of righteousness. They, of course, in the final judgment, will continue to be with him as sons and daughters of perdition” (Alvin R. Dyer, The Meaning of Truth, rev. ed., p.192).
